In this article we are going to answer all the questions you have about rafting.
We are taking you along with us for a high-thrill session in the Verdon Gorge!
What is rafting?
Rafting is a water sport in which participants descend a river in an inflatable whitewater craft. This aquatic activity can be a very exhilarating experience as participants navigate rapids and manoeuvre through obstacles.
A rafting trip through the rapids of the Verdon allows you to enjoy nature by passing through magnificent landscapes, between cliffs, and obviously it allows you to get some exercise. But above all, it's an excellent way to bond with friends or family.
Rafting or hydrospeed: what's the difference?
Rafting is a team activity done in a boat (around 8 participants) to navigate down rapids.
Hydrospeed, meanwhile, is a float that you steer independently to play with the current and waves in the heart of the gorges. You navigate individually, but the trip is done as a group.
Both of these activities take place in whitewater and guarantee an adrenaline rush.
How many people can there be in a raft?
The inflatable boats or rafts can accommodate up to 8 participants. An experienced guide is part of the crew to help you steer the raft through the whitewater.
There are also smaller boats for 4-person craft.
How does a rafting trip work?
A guide accompanies the participants in the inflatable boat. The team will navigate the whitewater of the canyon by manoeuvring the raft following their guide's instructions. They will need to manage the rapids and obstacles to avoid falling into the water. Unless the guide decides otherwise by having you discover tricks with the raft. Do not hesitate to ask them if you have an adventurous spirit! It is an unforgettable playground.
When to go rafting in the Verdon Gorge?
The best time for rafting in the Verdon Gorge canyon is from April to October. The water level is at its highest in May and June, making it the best period for experienced rafters or the most athletic participants. July and August are the busiest months, so if you want to avoid the crowds, you can enjoy it in September or October.
The activity depends entirely on the filling levels of the EDF dam on the Verdon. In summer, rafting only takes place on water release days. Some years the level is too low to be able to go rafting (such as in 2022). In this case, you can discover other water activities which will allow you to enjoy the Verdon region and the freshness of the river's waters. Our teams at the leisure base in the village of Castellane are at your disposal to answer your questions and help you book a route.
How to prepare for your rafting session?
There are several things you need to do to prepare for your session of Verdon rafting. First of all, you need to dress for the occasion. Wear clothes that you can get wet and that dry quickly. Secondly, apply sunscreen to all exposed skin. Thirdly, you must drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Finally, you should have a light meal before getting on the river.
Nevertheless, it is not necessary to have technical navigation skills as the guide steers the team on board the raft.
