Everything you need to know about the practice of’Hydrospeed
What is the history of hydrospeed?
The launch of the practice of hydrospeed as a sporting discipline, comes from the invention of three engineers from the Ponts et Chaussées in Paris. Thus, the float named « Hydrospeed »appeared in 1978. It is thanks to this wonderful invention that it is possible to have protection, combined with a flotation system. Therefore, in terms of equipment, it is a float.
The person who practises’Hydrospeed is equipped with a rigid foam float, as well as a reinforced neoprene wetsuit, a life jacket, a helmet and flippers.
What will propel you forward through the watercourses is the propulsion of your flippers while using your body and the float, which will allow you to steer yourself in the white waters of the Verdon. Concretely, once positioned on the float you will be immersed in the rapids of the Verdon Gorges, for an incredible aquatic activity with family or friends.
What physical fitness is required to go hydrospeeding?
This whitewater sport demands all your energy. It is therefore necessary to prepare physically beforehand, as with any sporting activity. The longer the course and the colder the water, the more the participants' commitment is called upon. Ultimately, you need to possess a minimum of inner strength to venture into all situations.
Another dimension to take into account is sight. It is very important for an overall view of the river. If you wear prescription glasses, diving goggles or a diving mask fitted with corrective lenses may prove necessary. On the other hand, people who are prone to cramps need to be careful due to the cold and the physical effort involved in practising this aquatic activity.
Where can hydrospeed be practiced in the Verdon?
For a first-time experience or for seasoned’Hydrospeed, the Gorges du Verdon website offers you a range of thrills to suit all your desires. It is the largest canyon in Europe, offering breathtaking landscapes. This sporting activity can be practised in torrents. These torrents must have a good drop (not as steep as in canyoning) and a significant flow. At our Rafting Verdon outdoor activity base, we offer you a descent into whitewater hydroboard in the Verdon over a half-day.
Here we go for a 4 km descent, which is around 1 hour 30 minutes of floating, comfortably positioned on your board and equipped with your fins. The first part is straightforward, allowing you to gently get to grips with this sporting activity. Afterwards, we move on to small rapids (class II) (you can see the classification of the rapids here) while entering the Verdon Gorge. The moderately difficult rapids (class III) follow one another to finally lead us to the Couloir Samson, where the Solitaire rapid awaits us. After navigating it, it will be possible to surf in a small stopper wave or go back through the final rapid.
The necessary supervision is provided by experienced, state-qualified guides. These individuals guarantee that the descent runs smoothly and ensure safety through difficult sections. Indeed, the Verdon is a technical and hazardous river. To take part in whitewater activities, it is necessary to be able to swim and to be supervised by approved professionals.
Ultimately, Hydrospeed or whitewater swimming is made for thrill-seekers, as you will be in the rapids on a float. Unlike rafting, you will need to create harmony with the members of your group for the day, whereas during your descents in Hydrospeed, you will need to be independent and let yourself be carried along the natural waterslides that mark out the route while steering yourself using your body and the propulsion of your flippers. It is a fun time to share with family or friends, dedicated to river watersports! See you for a Hydrospeed in the clear waters of the stunning Verdon gorges. A memorable experience guaranteed!
